How often Should You Change your Oil

The Myth of 3,000 Miles

Most people have been taught to think you need to change your oil and filter in your car every 3,000 miles by the small oil change shops. They have created this myth so you will bring your car in sooner than it needs and they will get more business. Most manufacturers have listed a much higher number in their owner's manuals and if you read carefully, you will find they recommend changing the oil ever 5,000 - 7,500 miles. Remember, the manufacturer designed, build and tested your vehicle. They also warranty most cars up to 40,000 miles now so they would not put down bad advice in their owner's manuals and be stuck fixing their vehicles.

Who Promotes the 3,000 Mile Oil Change?

It is funny to think who promotes the notion that we should change the oil in our vehicles every 3,000 miles. This is supported and promoted by those who profit from changing the oil. Have you noticed who sponsors ads or articles that make you feel guilty for not changing your oil at this mark? Oil companies and oil change shops!! If these businesses can convince you to get new oil every 3,000 miles instead of 6,000 or 7,500, their profit doubles. I'm sure we have all been scared we will ruin our motor if we go over the 3,000 mile mark without changing our oil and this is simply not true. Today's oil is so good and will protect your engine even if you choose to leave it in their for as long as 7,500 miles, and you can perform this auto maintenance by yourself.

What is Correct Mileage for Oil Change?

So what is the correct interval for oil changes? In truth, there are many different opinions about the proper mileage for changing your oil as their are people interested in the debate. Some swear for changing ever 3,000 and others have had great luck changing every 8,000 miles. When all factors are considered, the best oil change will be between 5,000 and 6,000 miles depending on your owners manual. This is also a great time to get your tires rotated! Rotating your tires and changing your oil at the same time helps you remember to have it done and saves your time.

Why Changing Your Vehicle's Oil is Important

By

Ask anyone about the oil in the car and they'll say what? Oh, it has to be changed every 3,000 miles!

In truth, this is really an inaccurate figure. The 3,000 mile figure comes from a marketing pitch. Exact figures are more dependent on the type of driving style you have. Regardless, it is absolutely true that you need to change your oil every so often to get the most out of your car. Most people don't know why though. In this article, we delve into the reasons.

Oil is a magical substance. For all the bashing that it gets in the environmental debates, our lives would be drastically different without it. Oil is used in everything from plastics to fertilizers to fuel and, of course, lubrication. When it comes to your engine, oil is the key to making it last. Without lubrication, the metal parts would just grind together and seize up in a matter of minutes. That would make owning a car a perilous investment.

So, what is it that oil specifically does for your car? The first thing it does is keep the engine cooler. It does this as a matter of design. By that, I mean the design of the engine and the layout of the oil system allows it to actually cool and draw heat from the engine. It does this because the oil collects in something called the oil pan. The oil pan is located at the bottom of the engine. As the car is moving, air rushes by the oil pan. The cooled oil then circulates up through the engine and siphons off some of the heat being produced. A car still needs a coolant system, but oil definitely plays a part in the process.

Shocks and Strut Repair

Shocks and strut repairs are the most common auto repair fraud perpetrated against vehicle owners.
Many people are fooled into buying shocks and struts before it is necessary. Struts and shocks do wear out and need to be replaced but this does not occur as often as most people think. The struts and shocks on many of today's cars can last well over 100,000 miles!

As with most other repairs, some basic knowledge will help you avoid spending money you shouldn't, and understanding struts and shocks is probably easier that you think. To understand when struts or shocks need to be replaced, you need to know what they are and what they do. Although struts and shocks are very different in appearance, they serve the same purpose: to prevent your car from continuing to bounce up and down after the first time. If you jump up and down on the front bumper of a car with good shocks and struts and then jump off the car will immediately stop bouncing. Of on the other hand the shocks or struts are worn, the car will continue to bounce a few times after you jump off.

The more it bounces, the more the struts or shocks are worn. In fact if you took the shocks completely off of a car, it would bounce up and down five to ten times before it stopped. Shocks and struts are needed because cars have springs that support the weight of the car. These springs help the car ride smoothly over dips and bumps, and a spring as you know, tends to bounce again and again. The shocks and struts help settle the springs down. They also prevent the car from bouncing, swerving, and swaying and they help keep all the wheels in contact with the pavement so you can maintain control in curves and on rough surfaces.

Transmission Repair Basics

It's easy to replace Automatic Transmission Cooling Lines yourself - if you know this handy trick.

I'm not very handy when it comes to fixing things. Under most circumstances I wouldn't even think about fixing a transmission problem myself, but what are you going to do when the repair shop is closed and your car breaks down? As a point of masculine pride I had to at least take a look. I mean, my mechanic relies upon my expert diagnosis - Right?

So I had a look and actually found the problem - one of the transmission lines was leaking. I look at it for a little while, wiggle a few things, get on the ground to have a look from underneath. You know what? I think I can repair this, myself!

It looked pretty simple: just disconnect both ends, remove the line from the retaining clips, replace with the new line, reconnect and I'm done. Nothing to it. I do a quick Google search and find that I'm right; there's nothing to it...And Bonus... the line is attached with Quick Releases. I'll be back on the road in no time.

Two hours later and the quick releases still won't release! Hop on Google again and this time I actually read (rather than scanned) the How-To's and find that I need a Quick Release Disconnect Tool to make the Quick Releases release.

Why Do Brakes Squeal And How To Fix Them

Noisy brakes are not only annoying, they can also be a sign of ineffective stopping power which is
dangerous for you and others on the road. It is important to note that not all noise made by your brakes means they are failing, from time to time your breaks will make some noise.

What Makes Brakes Squeal?

Denver brake repair experts say, modern braking systems use a cast-iron disc that is squeezed between two brake pads which are lined with friction material. The disc, pads and caliper can at times begin to vibrate which causes the system to give off a high frequency noise. The noise that is produced depends on how hard you press down on the pedal. Some brake systems are more prone to squealing than others, so it is important to research the brakes you are recommended before having them installed. If you find your brakes to be too noisy, or suspect a problem with your brakes, bring your vehicle into a mechanic. Mechanics can dampen the noise, change the resonant frequency of the arrangement, or replace your brakes.

The Fix(es)
  • Check for loose parts.
  • Replace shims or clips that are loose or damaged.
  • Try applying a dampening paste.
  • Replace worn brake pads.
  • Change out the brake pad to one made with a different material.
  • Check the brake rotor or drum for scoring and other wear.
  • Have the rotors resurfaced if their wear is not too deep.
  • Replace the rotors or drums.

Finding the Right Mechanic in Denver

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

There are many mechanics out there offering a wide range of services. Mechanics are no different from any other professional service; some are good, some are bad and the rest fill in between.  The big question is, how do you find the right Denver mechanic for you and your vehicle?

In our opinion, a good mechanic is a person who can quickly solve difficult auto repair problems at a reasonable expense.  They actually understand what makes a car work and why things happen the way they do, instead of simply knowing how to replace old parts with new ones.  A good mechanic can repair a car on the first attempt without guessing. A bad mechanic bluffs his way through every repair. Even if he figures out how to do a repair, he doesn't really understand what happens next. A good mechanic will give an estimate very close to the final charges. A bad mechanic will give a low estimate to get your business and then have excuses for up-charges and why your final bill is so much higher than their estimate.  A bad mechanic will actually do more harm than good to a car.  There are plenty of bad mechanics out there that have unfortunately given our industry a bad rap.

Somewhere between the good and bad mechanics are the 'part changers'.  The parts changers have a decent amount of experience and can do specific repairs with confidence.  A parts changer may not have the training or be intelligent enough to be a top-notch technician but he is good at what he does. When a new or unusual problem with a vehicle comes up however, this mechanic has no idea what to do. Parts changers however are a valuable part of the auto repair industry.

The Signs of A Good Mechanic

It takes three main things to make a good mechanic; knowledge, experience and intelligense. Intelligence was listed last because it can sometimes be repalced with hard work in the garage.  There is, however, no substitute for knowledge and experience which truly goes hand in hand. No matter how much technical schooling is completed or how many technical books are studied, a technician will not be top notch until he has actually worked in the field for several years.

Experience teaches mechanics that simply cannot be learned in the class room.  There are only so many repair situations that can be simulated in a classroom shop.  A mechanic with several years under his belt are worth a lot more than someone who just graduated from the top auto repair school around.  Experience without knowledge usually equates to a good parts changer which is not a bad thing.

Replacing your Brake Pads - Shoes

On disk brakes on a vehicle, the pads rub against the brake rotors. A brake pad consists of a friction material area about a half inch thick.  The friction material and the backing plate are permanently bonded together to forma brake pad. Two brake pads are used per wheel. The friction material is made of a softer material that rubs against the hard metal rotor create the friction that stops the car.  Most brake pads manufactured today contain a small amount of tiny metal particles within the friction material and ultimately last longer.  Every time the brake pads are used a small amount of the friction material is warn off.  The more you use your brakes, the more your pads will wear down and eventually wear out.

Replacing your Pads & Shoes
Since brake pads are designed to wear out, they are designed to be replaced relatively easy.  During the time you own your car, you will most likely have to replace either your brake pads or shoes as some point.  The best time to replace the pads is just before all the friction material is worn off. If pads are left on the vehicle until there is no friction material left, the metal backing plate will grind into the rotar and quickly destroy it. This will add a significant amount on your repair bill so you do NOT want to wait!

How to Shop for Struts and Shocks

When you need struts or shocks, call a few auto service shops to compare prices and warranties. Most
tire dealers, brake repair centers, and independent shops sell and install struts and shocks. When struts are replaced the alignment will need to be checked. Therefore, a center that has alignment capabilities is a good choice, although you could take your car to another shop to have it alinged. However don't drive your car more than about twenty miles before it is aligned. If you are replacing shocks only, the alignment need not be checked unless you notice uneven wear. Although most better quality shocks or struts are warranted for as long as you own them, this probably does not cover labor. Make sure you ask about this and any other warranty information when you call for an estimate. Since struts make up a major portion of the suspension, the time and labor requires to install them will be significantly higher than on a shock. You can expect to pay around ten to sixty dollars per strut for labor.

When shopping around for shocks and struts make sure to ask for brand name from your Denver auto repair shop. About ninety percent of all shocks are made by just two companies, Gabriel and Monroe, so you will hear these two names over and over. Many people will say their shocks and struts are made by just two companies, but the brand name won't be on the box, or the shock. These are private label shocks. One of the big shock makers builds them for another company who uses their own name brand. The only disadvantage to a private label is that the warranty will be honored only by the company who sold the shock. A national brand name shock will be warranted at any dealer who carries that brand. Be sure to get all these details in order to make a fair comparison and to help budget can stand it, the best quality struts or shocks will provide a smoother ride for a longer time. Don't be tempted to go with the lowest price just for the sake of saving money, you may just end up disappointed.

When Should you Get a Tire Alignment

Written by: Rick Popely on cars.com

If your car drifts to one side and you have to turn the steering wheel away from the center position to drive straight, that is a good indication that your wheels are out of alignment. Perhaps it is the result of hitting a deep pothole or scoring a direct hit on a curb while parking.

Before you head off to a repair shop to have your wheels aligned, a job that typically costs about $60 to $100 for most vehicles, it would be a good idea to check your tire pressure. Under-inflated tires can also cause a vehicle to pull to one side, so eliminate that possibility first.

You might also want to inspect your tires to see if there is uneven tire wear, such as the tread being worn off along one edge, another sign of an alignment issue. However, it can be hard to separate normal from excessive wear, so unless you're well trained in "tireology" you shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Vibrations in your wheels are different from alignment problems. Vibrations are probably caused by wheels being out of balance or bent (potholes can do that) or because suspension parts are worn, and getting your wheels aligned won't solve those problems.

Some vehicles require only that the front wheels be aligned, but many car-based models require four-wheel alignment. Alignment specifications differ by vehicle, and it isn't as simple as just making sure all four wheels are pointed straight ahead.

Depending on the vehicle, proper alignment involves setting the camber (inward or outward tilt of the wheels when looking head on), caster (wheel tilt front or back looking from the side) and toe-in or toe-out (looking down at the wheels from above). The adjustments are measured in fractions of an inch and require specialized alignment equipment.

Auto Repair Costs Broken Down by State

When that “check engine” light comes on, there’s a good reason to get worried. Even if it doesn’t leave you stranded in an unfamiliar part of town after dark it’s likely to take a bite out of your savings, especially as recent studies have indicated automotive repair costs rose by about 10 percent last year.

That is, of course, an average that varied significantly by region. Vermont saw repair costs decline last year, according to a new study by automotive service site CarMD, making it America’s most affordable place to take your car in. At the other extreme was New Jersey where the typical visit to a service shop cost almost 50 percent more than in Vermont.

Traditionally, the West Coast is the place where repairs have been most expensive. But in its latest annual car-repair cost survey, CarMD found California among the Top Five, with the rest of those spots filled by states along the Eastern Seaboard, including not only The Garden State but North Carolina, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Repairs in the Northeast rose 11.6 percent in 2012, faster than the rest of the country, according to a study of 161,000 repairs.

"In 2012, we saw a dramatic shift in the top five most expensive states for average car repairs, as many drivers along the East Coast incurred rising auto-repair costs, while they simultaneously contended with Hurricane Sandy's aftermath," CarMD CEO Leon Chen noted. "Car owners in many states also continued to put off small repairs, contributing to cumulative failures with increased repair costs."

Irregular Tire Wear: Cupping

One problem that happens when tire rotation suggestions are not taken seriously is irregular tire wear. Irregular tire wear happens on the front tires of some cars, but usually happens on the back tires on vehicles with front-wheel-drive. If two tires remain on the rear of a car too long, they can develop humps and valleys in the tread pattern. This type of wears is usually called cupping. Cupping is also known as heal and toe or high low wear. This wear can cause a rough and noisy ride. The noise sounds like a roar from big mud tires. You can feel this issue with your hands when the problem is really severe. It isn't clear what causes this wear. The problem started appearing in auto shops during the eighties and some Denver auto repair shops say that the problem is caused by shocks, or car design. Although we do not know why this problem occurs, it is possible to know when it happens. Cupping occurs when the tires are run too long without being rotated How long is too long? This figure varies from car to car, but this wear usually shows up at 10,000 miles. The important thing to know is that proper tire rotation will almost always prevent this problem from ever occur.

How to Determine Auto Repair Labor Costs

Have you ever wondered how a shop determines how much labor to charge for a repair? Most service centers use a book, or computer software called a labor guide. This book lists practically every repair, for almost every car. This guide lists how long a specific repair should take for any make and model car, which allows a shop to estimate the labor charge before a hob is started. The guide gives the labor in time, not in dollars. The service center must multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours listed in the guide. For example, if a labor guide shows the number of hours it takes to rebuild a transmission, the service center would multiply its rate per hour by the number of hours to complete the job. Some shops consider their own experience when estimating the time for a specific repair. Look for a shop that specializes in the car or specific type of repair you need. If the repair you require is the shops specialty, the time it takes to complete the job can be cut in half.

If you are in a Denver auto repair shop for a repair and you suspect that you are being overcharged for the labor, try calling several other shops to ask them for an estimate on the amount of time they have listed in their labor guide. Most service centers will be glad to help you because they have a chance of getting a new customer. Ask them for the amount of time for the repair you need and the name of the labor guide they are using. If the labor price you are being charged does not agree with the labor guide, stop the repair before it starts and ask the service manager how he determined the labor price. If he cannot offer a good explanation, get out of there. You are the one in control. Make sure to get the repairs you want and nothing more.

How to Avoid Being a Bad Auto Repair Customer

Everyone would like to make a lasting and positive relationship with an Denver mechanic. There are a few things to avoid to ensure you are a good customer. First, never bicker and haggle over price. A customer that always comes in begging and argues over price will certainly end up on a mechanics bad side very quickly. Try to get the price settles quickly by doing research on the average price of the repair. You should know what the job will cost before you authorize starting on the project, so complaining after the job is finished. If you've done your homework and know you're getting a fair price, there's nothing wrong with acting as if you don't mind paying the price.

Another pro tip is to avoid spending too much time talking to mechanics and managers about things unrelated to your vehicle. A few kind words or some small talk is really all most mechanics have time for. This is especially true when you have them on the phone. You should state the reason for calling and get off the phone. Phone time takes the technician away from their work and other customers.

You can stay off a mechanics bad list by avoiding hanging over their shoulder to watch them work. This is uncomfortable for most people and can give the technician a sense of distrust. Wait in the customer lounge unless you are invited into the shop. Finally, if  you take your car to several shops don't attempt to haggle with this fact. If a manager believes that theirs is the only shop you visit, it puts you at an advantage.

Tires in Cold Pressure

Most people don't understand cold pressure doesn't necessarily mean the weather must be cold. It means your tires should be cold when they are checked before you drive.  When you drive, your tires heat up significantly when you drive and the increased temperature causes the pressure to increase.  It is a law of nature that if air is confined to a small area of space such as a tire and the temperature increases, the pressure will also rise.  If the temperature decreases, so will the pressure.  Knowing this, we understand you cannot accurately check the tire pressure of your tires once you have driven a few miles.

Because tires tend to lose small amounts of air over a period of time, the pressure should be checked once every month.  If your tires only lose a pound or two between checks, this is normal.  Air can sometimes escape through the tiny pores in the rubber much in the same way that a rubber balloon loses air after a few days.  An older tire may be more susceptible  to bigger leaks because the rubber gets dry and can even develop small cracks.  If you check your tires two or three months in a row and you haven't lost any air, you wont need to check the pressure each month.

When you add air to your tire, make sure you do not over fill it.  Many gas stations have compressed air or your can go to a Downing repair shop or tire shop to have your tires pressure checked and filled for you.  A week after you fill you tires, you will want to check the pressure again to make sure you didn't over fill or lose pressure.  Most tire gauges have a small nipple that is used to push in the valve to let excess air escape if you get too much pressure. If you purchased new tires from a tire dealer, they should be happy to add air for you at no charge. This will help assure them that you will get the most from your tires and purchased from them.

If you are looking for a place to check your tire pressure in Denver, check out Downing Street Garage at 401 Downing St  Denver, CO 80218 or call them at (303) 777-0142.

Repairing Vehicle Axles

The best way to replace a bad outer joint is to replace the entire axle on that side. This was not always the case, however. When FWD vehicles first came out, new axles were very expensive, sometimes over $500 each! At that time, it was cheaper to replace just the damaged CV joint and boot. Now it is actually less expensive to buy just the CV joint. When an old axle is re-manufactured the worn or damaged parts are re-machined or replaced and the axle will be as good as new, or better. There is another advantage: These axles not only have re-manufactured outer joints, but the inner joints will be as well, and new boots, grease, and clamps already installed. Replacing the entire axle, as opposed to replacing only the joint and boot, is almost always less expensive and less prone to giving you or your mechanic trouble. Furthermore, the Denver mechanic labor to replace the entire axle should e a little less than replacing the joint and boot, usually around $50 per axle. Today, re-manufactured axles cost from $75 to over $150 each for most common car models. You will usually need to replace only one axle at a time. It is not uncommon for a car to need an axle on one side but not the other. When shopping for a axle service center to replace the axle, make sure to compare the warranties.

So far, the outer joint has been the topic of discussion, because they are far more likely to go bad. Inner CV joints are not subjected to the same intense twisting and movement as outer joints, so they don't wear out as often-- but they can go bad. The symptoms for a bad inner joint are much different from the popping that an outer joint makes. In fact, a bad inner joint will not typically cause any strange noises. A bad inner joint will instead cause the car to shake and wobble back and forth, mostly when you are speeding up from a complete stop. This wobble which makes the whole car to move left and right, can be very severe while pressing the gas pedal and will then smooth out when the pedal is released. This condition can also come and go. It may happen once in every ten starts, or it may occur every time you start the car. This type of wobble or shimmy is almost always caused by a bad inner CV joint and should not be confused with a bad tire. Many new tires have been purchased to correct a vibration caused by an axle. A bad tire causes the car to shake whether the gas pedal is being pressed or not.

Monday

When to Have Your Brake Pads Inspected

Brake shoes are similar to brake pads and are designed to wear out. They are pressed against the inside of the brake drums to stop the car. Shoes are used only with drum brakes and are found only on the rear of modern cars. Many cars do not use drum brakes at all; these cars have disk brakes on the front and the rear. There are two brake shoes per rear wheel.

Any time the tires are off the car or whenever you hear or feel anything strange from your brakes, your brakes should be inspected. The best time is when you are having the tires rotated, which should be about every 5-7 thousand miles. This relatively short interval almost always allows you to catch the pads before they wear out completely. Even if the shop that does your tire rotation does not repair brakes, someone there can probably tell you approximately how much life is left on them. Simply ask them to look at your brakes while the wheels are off. Most cars can be checked with almost no effort if the tires are already off, so many shops will not change for such a check.

Warning Signs
Many cars and trucks have a built -in warning system that alerts you about worn brake pads- a device called a warning sensor. The appropriate slang term is "squealer." This squealer makes a high-pitched squeak when the brake pads are about 80-90% worn. The warning sensor is a small metal finger that gets closer and closer to the rotor as the brake pads wear thin. When the brake pads are worn out, this finger begins to scrape the rotor as the car rolls. This causes an annoying squeak which is similar to that of fingers on a chalkboard. A warning sensor squeal will usually stop when you apply your brakes. The squealer will not damage the rotor but it may sound like it is. When the squeak begins, Denver mechanic pros suggest you need to get new brake pads right away.
